Isabella Darke
(BSC MA) Dramatherapist (HCPC)
I am qualified to work with adults and children, providing an environment where you can express freely, however you would like to. Dramatherapy is a creative form of psychotherapy, and it can be especially useful when finding words that are difficult to say.
To give you an idea of what this style of therapy and your sessions will look like, I tailor them to suit you and your needs. This can incorporate any creative way/medium to support what you might want to communicate without feeling exposed. Music, art, mindfulness, movement, and story work are some of the aspects used and this way of working can help us to understand and identify what might be making your life feel overwhelming or any struggles you may be having. You do not need any previous experience within the arts as I will help to make your sessions go at your own pace. We can work through things together using talking, however bringing the creative side in allows freedom to express things that you might not be ready to say to anyone just yet. This creates a safe environment that can alleviate feelings of awkwardness or a fear or being left in silence. I aim to prevent this and provide a free flowing space where therapy is enjoyable and gives self-learning with ways to understand what you need to move forward.
Sessions include a chance to check in with how you are in the moment, engage with creative work and leave space for reflection. We will work together to build a trusting place, without judgement where you have a space for you to work on what life might be throwing at you. Sometimes, we can feel a problem is too small, too big or we just do not know what we would say in therapy. I try to help you in this through the use of dramatherapy as it is an effective way to eliminate feelings of embarrassment, self-criticism, and self-consciousness. Through the arts, we can let out, what can get stuck in our thoughts. More difficult emotions can be expressed and processed such as frustration, fear, sadness and disappointment. Using this approach, you can allow doors to be opened and it can feel easier to come in and engage. I have no expectations of what our work might involve, and this can decrease any pressures felt.
Training and experience:
I first studied Psychology at undergraduate level, before gaining clinical experience with adults and children to begin my master’s degree in Dramatherapy. Whilst training, I have worked in an educational setting, with children and young people. Following this, I moved into the NHS public sector with adults’ mental health difficulties.
I have an established way of working and I am confident in my approach and how it helps clients to come to terms with changes in their lives, past and present as well as difficult feelings that can be confusing and need working through.
