Abigel Tamasi

Psychodynamic Counsellor (BACP)

About Me

I am in my final year of professional counselling at Hills Road College in Cambridge gaining theoretical and practical knowledge to support my clients. Through the client’s shared insight of how they feel or what has been happening to them, I am able to help the client in strengthening their own emotional resources and create positive life changes. I aspire to help clients overcome possible habitual unhelpful reactions to life’s challenges and establish a more mindful and resilient way of coping. I bring empathy, sensitivity and curiosity to my sessions to support people within their own story.

Alongside my theoretical training, I work for a charity where I support very vulnerable people which has provided me with the privilege of supporting individuals through difficult circumstances.

My Therapy Practice

A question that I ask of myself is how to find balance in a world full of imbalance; where we can be emotionally overloaded but still have a feeling of emptiness. The sense of being too full or empty can be a sign of burnout where inner stability is needed. I aim to support the process of emotionally working out where energy is being overspent and to enable personal boundary setting.

Different modalities have varied techniques and methods to support. I feel the most important element in counselling is the therapeutic relationship between the counsellor and the client focusing on trust and confidentiality. For me, those two values help a client to feel that they can say anything, little, big or simply how their day has gone. How you have experienced something can signify how you personally process and where your coping strategies may have taken place; this could be your childhood experience or other significant areas within your life that are unique to you.

How I work:

The Psychodynamic approach offers a wide range of tools and interventions which help to explore patterns in relationships, feelings and behaviours. Our observing recurring patterns can help us to consider how past experiences may be influencing reactions and outcomes. This develops greater awareness of oneself and the ability to make change. When applying these techniques, I will always first consider what best suits you. Some people prefer a more dynamic approach such as questions and interpretation while others need time and space to find their way into what they want to say. I pay close attention to your current state and needs and will tailor our sessions to be most beneficial to you.

My Training

I am training within the Level 4 Diploma in Therapeutic Counselling at Hills Road Adult Education College, Cambridge focusing on the Psychodynamic modality. Throughout my training, I have studied various modalities which has given me the opportunity to consider my own approach to be the most effective. This being said, my broader understanding of the counselling environment has enhanced the therapeutic tools that I can use within my practice. I am a Student Member of the British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy (BACP) and I align my work to the standards of the BACP Ethical Framework.
